First Start at the Very Beginning

January 19, 2012 § Leave a comment

“First start at the very beginning…”

Of course now I have The Sound of Music and Julie Andrews’ amazing voice stuck in my head. Good job, Lauren. As if I needed another distraction!

The beginning. This will be the first post of a couple, seeing as I feel like I have much to update you all on, and I get annoyed with sticking it all in one post. That bit of knowledge is the prelude to the beginning. And now….

THE BEGINNING! Happy 2012 everyone! I’ve been remiss with my blog, and have not only left you all alone during my ENTIRE MONTH OFF, but have not even bothered to wish the few followers I have happy holidays and happy new year. I hope you all have been delightful children and have not only been good over your holidays (Christmas, Hanukkah, Kwanza, or whatever holiday you choose to celebrate this winter season). I also hope that you have all made your new year resolutions. Now – keep to them!

My holidays were lovely. Got to see family (nieces and nephews – including a 10 day old Myra!), and enjoy their company. Best present was my new Kindle Fire, which is entertaining me and saving money on books – including school books!

I must be honest with you guys, I am totally distracted by the Sound of Music, and I will have to come back to blogging when it is over! Talk to you later my darlings. πŸ™‚

The Recent News

December 10, 2011 § Leave a comment

Has anyone noticed the snow falling from WordPress’s page? I’m loving it! That’s actually not what I’m intended to talk about, but it was snowing as I typed and I just wanted to say something about it!

Anyway. NaNoWriMo update? Check. I did finish with five days to spare, which was really a fantastic accomplishment for me! My friend John did beat me, because the validator added 500 words to his self-reported wordcount — that little bugger! All the same, this November was wonderfully productive and I’m really happy with how it went! I’m taking the story that sort of went off on its own, The Boy That Rides On Trains, and I’d like to beef it up, make it pretty, and perhaps try to publish it. Is that too crazy? I dunno, maybe it is. If there are any enthusiastic readers or good editors?!Β please drop me a note (somewhere..) and I can send you the first draft of the story. I’m working on a second draft as we speak, but it is going a little slowly due to a persistent lack of self-confidence and nagging self-doubt. I’ve also posted the first two chapters to another story I’m writing (that may turn into novel-material), and the first chapter of the second draft of the story I aforementioned that I’m editing.

Other things in life! I’ve had some personal school/people drama in my life that has been frustrating/depressing. Since this is a public blog I’d like to save this discussion for private or a much much later date. For now, let’s just say I’m trying to resolve it.

Finals are next week, and I’m TOTALLY psyched for those. Yeah right. Hopefully I will be able to breeze through them and get back home and enjoy a month off from school.

I’d also like to promote Puzzles.com and all the wonderful entertainment they provide. I spent way too much time last just doing logic puzzles, tangrams, a tessellation, and then this game called Strimko which I find I’m developing a small addiction to.

Anywho, this seems like a pretty good update and a nice place to leave off. I have studying to do, editing to do, and laundry to do. Plus I feel like eating some more. That beef ravioli was not enough to fill me until dinner….

Toodles, friends!

Thanksgiving Break, Dressage, and More NaNoWriMo!

November 22, 2011 § Leave a comment

Technically my Thanksgiving break starts tomorrow at 4pm. However, due to a wonderfully timed conference for religion scholars located in Santa Fe, New Mexico, my one class that takes place tomorrow (Tuesday) has been cancelled! So instead of doing nothing all day until my 2:30-3:50pm Global Christianity class, I got to go home today when my Intermediate Photography class ended at 4pm! Four-ish hours may not be long to those who must travel seven or eight hours to get home, but you know, it is a lot for me. I sang for almost that entire time! Wicked, Spirit: Stallion of the Cimarron (twice), and Classic Disney Volume 4 (or maybe it was Volume 1.. I can’t remember which number). Anyway, it was quite a drive. But now I am happily home with my parents and my four beloved cats – Feisty, Batman, Bella, and Byron! Feisty and I are cuddling now in my bed as I write this and prepare for some lovely sleep.

This Thanksgiving break I will be getting a wisdom tooth out (tomorrow at 9am as it happens), hopefully going to see a few movies, and with luck I’ll see a few friends as well! Thanksgiving itself will likely be small: it will be just my parents and I. Who knows if I’ll even get to really enjoy that turkey! Gah! I’m not big on a lot of Thanksgiving food, but for the foods I do like… If they’re sitting in front of me and I can’t eat them I’m gonna be pretty ticked off!

Dressage! We had our second dressage show this last weekend. I rode Rocky, a little Appaloosa guy… I thought he was going to go alright, until I found out he had a lot less go than I expected. I found myself resorting to giving him a good smack with the whip in my test (instead of using any vocal cues, for which I would be penalized), and he kicked right in front of the judge! In spite of this, I managed to get 4th of 9! Of course I’m not sure how I was lucky enough for this to happen, but I’m not complaining! πŸ™‚ As a team, Wooster got 6th of 9. Not perfect, but it wasn’t too bad. πŸ™‚ I really enjoy Dressage where I can show off more of what I can do, and there is more focus on the individual horse and rider, rather than a Hunt Seat show where you can get lost in the crowd. Besides, Dressage is more like Saddleseat, which I’m good at and have been doing most of my life! Haha…

NANOWRIMO! Of course I can’t forget Nano. I’m now closing in on 39k words. 38,827Β wordsΒ to be precise. πŸ˜€ I think this is a miracle, honestly. I can’t believe I’ve written this much. Keep wishing me luck on meeting the 50k goal by end of November 30th! I’m feeling pretty confident, and I’m trying to stay a few days ahead when it comes to word count, but I’m always worried something is going to happen and I’ll get behind. If I can finish a few days early, though, I’m going to be feeling flippin’ fantastic. (Say that 5 times fast!)

Anyway.. this was just a general update. Hope everyone is doing well, and I hope you all have a great Thanksgiving!

NaNoWriMo + Others…

November 14, 2011 § Leave a comment

Long time and no speaks from Miss Lauren! Hello friends! Sorry to leave you all hanging for so long. I’ve been very busy recently, or like, forever. Sometimes it is sleep-related, sometimes school-related, sometimes riding-related… whatever, you know.

….It might take me awhile to write this post, I’m getting a natural high off of listening to a soundtrack I love. (The Hunchback of Notre Dame)….

Anyway! I’ve been busy. I haven’t worked on my website much, I guess I just needed a break from it, and I haven’t gotten bak to it. But no worries friends, I will eventually!

I’ve been riding here at school of course, nothing new there. We had our first dressage show at Otterbein University the weekend of the 5th/6th. The first day went horribly and we sucked, for one reason or another. The second day went much better and we got 4th of 9 teams. I personally got 7th the first day and 4th the second day. So we did pretty well the second day, and that was all good. Our first hunt seat show was this past weekend (12th/13th). The first day I got 6th in my class (of 8) and we got 3rd as a team (which is pretty usual for us). The second day I got 3rd in my class (of 8) and we got reserve champion as a team! That was impressive because we beat the University of Findlay, and we were competing at their barn on their horses! We got a big team ribbon for that, which I got to keep as it so happens. And I pointed up into the next division, so I’m really happy about that too! It was a good weekend for us. πŸ™‚

NOW! As for the title of this post. That is right, friends, I am participating in National Novel Writing Month. I wanted to participate last year but I sort of joined too late. This year I am proudly keeping up, writing multiple short stories. I am notorious for starting a story and never finishing, so I figure this way I stand a chance of actually getting to those 50,000 words! I’m currently at 22,633 words!! Read it again! That’s the most I’ve ever written I believe… Anyway. I’ve been working on that. Wish me luck!!! I’ll have a couple little widget for that over to the right. *points*

Well, I’m sure I have plenty more to say, but I need to write for NaNo! So maybe more later. Peace out my friends, peace out. πŸ™‚ ❀

(P.S. For those wondering, I’m now listening to the Hercules soundtrack.)

Two Crazy Things

October 13, 2011 § Leave a comment

I have two crazy things to report on. Are you ready for them?

First! I am now a member of Twitter. I have tweeted three times. I’m not sure what to do about this. I’ve sworn against Twitter for a long time, and honestly I’m not sure I’ll ever really be into it, but in the mean time… I am, in fact, a Tweeter. (Is that the right word?) Me: @laurencat18 .. (Laurencat is a nickname given to me by one of my friends, and for once a nickname stuck!)

Second! I am now a member of HARPG on DeviantArt. I have my own stable, Silver Arrow Stables, and my first horse, a Friesian stallion named Omicron. I have also sworn against HARPG for awhile.

So much for swearing things off.. Twitter, HARPG have gone the way of getting a tattoo, getting my ears pierced…. I’m just not who I was when I was 10! πŸ˜› (Admittedly when I was 10, HARPG and Twitter didn’t exist…)

An Ordinary Update

September 25, 2011 § 1 Comment

I feel like writing a post on my blog, even though I don’t really have any particular to say. So I’ll just.. briefly go over the various things in my life. Or some of them..

  1. “Rack On!”
  2. Work
  3. Riding
  4. Love Life
  5. Family Weekend
  6. School
  7. Health
1. “Rack On!”
Still working on it… I got a few issues finally worked out with GoDaddy’s cron job manager. I thought it was a problem on their end, and I called them up and what not, but it turns out it was an error when I was linking to the perl file. Figures.
I calculated that I have like.. 20+ things left to do, some more complicated than others. Since I have other things going on in my life, it’ll take time to finish. I hope it is really successful when I launch it, because goddamnit I’ve spent a LOT of time on it!
2. Work
I don’t like to work.
I’ve been trying to get started on creating the art department’s website here at school. Haven’t gotten very far partly because of the slow-moving nature of college faculty… It’s just how it works.
My other work is scanning and editing images for the art department, and there hasn’t been anything new for that. Yay! Getting paid for not doing anything is fun.
3. Riding
This is actually a sort of big topic, and I could talk extensively, but I’ll shorten it up a bit. Started lessons this past week. Riding hunt seat at one barn, and I rode this big draft horse. She was pretty cool, but I got a work out! Plus I was wearing my tall boots, which still don’t fit me even after I stretched them, and so my right calf was pretty much crapping out on me. It wasn’t pretty. πŸ˜› Riding dressage at another barn, and I ended up having a lesson by myself, on a horse that I had never ridden before because she hadn’t been used for dressage before. It was a lovely ride, and I felt like I did a good job, and didn’t do so bad getting back into a discipline that I haven’t ridden since May! (The hunt seat wasn’t as smooth. πŸ˜› ) I’m really looking forward to this year! Plus, our dressage team is going to have FOUR people! Like it is supposed to!
By the way, if anyone knows where I can get cheap tall boots for showing that are around 16″ for calf width, and 16 or 17″ for height (rather than 18″, jeez!), please let me know. I’m short with humongous calves. (And I wear a size 8 or 9 for foot size.)
4. Love Life
I don’t even know if I should go into this. My love life is really up and down and rollercoaster-y. I broke up with my boyfriend of two years + a couple weeks ago, then Facebook officialized it last week. Then I hung out with a guy who is going to be leaving the school for an indefinite period of time. One or two people I sorta know have hit on me, and I’m not 100% sure what to make of that. Happy, but sometimes confused. It’s just… very dramatic. Why can’t I have a ‘normal’ love life that I can keep up with?
5. Family Weekend
My parents came to visit this weekend for the college’s family weekend. It’s the most I’ve done in one weekend for quite awhile! I enjoyed their company, and I got to eat good food several times! Only problem with my parents visiting me is that I don’t get to go home and see my cats. I miss them. 😦 But all the same, I’m very glad I got to see my parents, and they brought me some stuff that I’d left behind. Can’t wait for fall break in 2-3 weeks!
6. School
I’m doing homework in the library for the first time in college. Of course as I type this I’m not doing homework, but I was!! And I will return to it as soon as I get done writing this blog post.
School work is manageable. My Global Christianity class piles on the reading, and I’m very behind because I don’t like to do the reading and it is very dense. Yaaay… Art History seems to be slow as usual, and Stats is pretty good. Photography is good except for trying to print transparency negatives makes it sound like we’re all trying to brutally murder the printer. It’s a stupid printer.
7. Health
I’m sick with a sore throat, and my sleep schedule is wacky like usual. It makes me sad. I’m a big baby when it comes to sore throat, so this is really a big downer for me.
